Our First Lady

First Lady Cherry A. Maxwell

The First Lady of East Friendship Baptist Church is a dedicated servant-leader with the dominant gifts of helps and administration.  She has come to EFBC not only to co-lead the women’s ministry but to co-labor with her husband, Pastor Melvin M. Maxwell.  She has a passion for Church Administration, Communications and Technology, Youth Ministry, Evangelism, and Congregational Care ministries.  In addition, she can assess the needs of the congregation and community then design ministries to meet those needs.

Prior to becoming a disciple of East Friendship, First Lady Cherry joined the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, DC under the leadership of Reverend Dr. H. Beecher Hicks Jr.  She immediately went to work serving as the Treasurer and a member of the Women’s Ministry Leadership Team.  She also served as the Administrator for the Teen Ministry, and for several years she worked diligently on the H. Beecher Hicks Sr. Institute for Great Preaching.  Along with her husband, they offered pastoral care and mentorship to many married couples and single women; and she provided customer care in the church office every Sunday causing many people to believe that she was on staff at Metropolitan.  Over the years in ministry at other churches she was Director of Evangelism, Sunday School Teacher, and mentor to girls.

First Lady Maxwell retired in March 2012 from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant after serving 30 years.  She was the Superintendent of the Department of Defense, Physical Disability Board of Review and Superintendent of the Air Force Defense Integrated Military Human Resource System Program Office assigned to the Pentagon.  She was selected as the principal Air Force Representative for the $800M Defense Integrated Human Resource System design and development project which integrated all DOD human resource and pay systems.

Throughout her Air Force Career she has served in many distinguished positions to include:
Member of the HQ Air Force Reserve Inspector General Team performing quality assessment at various Air Force bases; Team Lead and Change Management Analyst for the Joint Requirements and Integration Office in Pentagon; Superintendent of Military Personnel Flight at the 914th Wing in Niagara Falls, NY; member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service (DACOWITS), and was handpicked by the Pentagon to serve on the Air Force Association Reserve Council which delivered vital issues to Capitol Hill for possible changes to the law.

First Lady Maxwell was one of the rare Air Force personnel who attained the top rank of Chief Master Sergeant in the Enlisted Corp within 15 years.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management from Houghton College, and an Associates degree in Personnel Administration from the Community College of the Air Force.  First Lady Cherry’s dedication to the United States Air Force is exceeded only by her dedication to Christ, her family, and the community.  She has served as an ambassador and Loan Executive for the United Way, President of the Women of Value Investment Group, Member of Jack and Jill, and has worked in a multitude of community and church activities impacting married couples, children and youth, and women.

First Lady Cherry and Pastor Maxwell have been married for 30 years; they are the proud parents of Maurice, Mikaela, Mariah and granddaughter Madisyn.
